Above the waves…

BeFunky_stormy_sea_by_alexlinde-d3y6mgd.jpgTonight Hillsong United was awarded the song of the year at the 50th Annual GMA Dove Awards.
“Oceans (Where Feet May Fail)”
is a powerful song and I’ve found it to be my anthem this year, singing it, praying it, wondering just how I would be living it.

“Spirit lead me where my trust is without borders
Let me walk upon the waters
    Wherever You would call me
Take me deeper than my feet could ever wander
And my faith will be made stronger
In the presence of my Savior”

That can be a dangerous prayer.

    Be prepared for the answer.

Scary isn’t always accompanied by adventure. Sometimes it is just accompanied by more scary.

Peter asked Jesus, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.” (Matthew 14:28)

I’d say that was deeper than his feet would have wandered on their own.

And it was scary.

But before we get too hard on Peter for sinking, remember that this was about 3 o’clock in the morning. It was dark out there. First-century-in-the-middle-of-the-sea-dark, not light-shining-from-the-streetlight-dark.

The disciples couldn’t see Jesus very well. The rest were all sitting in the boat, still shaking over a potential ghost sighting.

And Peter was out on the water, in the presence of Jesus, calling out.

And I guarantee you his faith was stronger because of it.

Trust without borders?

Those waves may not look the way we think. I like adventure, maybe even with a little scary thrown in. But what about when there is no adventure? When the waves just look like…

    sinking?

“Your grace abounds in deepest waters.”

“Lord, save me!”

      “Oceans (Where Feet May Fail)”
      Hillsong

You call me out upon the waters
The great unknown where feet may fail
And there I find You in the mystery
      In oceans deep
      My faith will stand

And I will call upon Your name
And keep my eyes above the waves
      When oceans rise
My soul will rest in Your embrace
For I am Yours and You are mine

Your grace abounds in deepest waters
      Your sovereign hand
      Will be my guide
Where feet may fail and fear surrounds me
You’ve never failed and You won’t start now

So I will call upon Your name
And keep my eyes above the waves
      When oceans rise
My soul will rest in Your embrace
For I am Yours and You are mine

Spirit lead me where my trust is without borders
Let me walk upon the waters
      Wherever You would call me
Take me deeper than my feet could ever wander
And my faith will be made stronger
In the presence of my Savior

I will call upon Your name
Keep my eyes above the waves
My soul will rest in Your embrace
I am Yours and You are mine

“And if God cares so wonderfully for wildflowers that are here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow, He will certainly care for you. Why do you have so little faith?
“So don’t worry about these things, saying ‘What will we eat? What will we drink? What will we wear?’
“These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers, but your heavenly Father already knows all your needs.
“Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and He will give you everything you need.
“So don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today.” Matthew 6:30-34 NLT
